Performing arts students prepare to stage National Theatre play

Performing Arts students from Walsall College are to showcase their talents to the public with a performance of a National Theatre play entitled ‘FOMO’.

‘FOMO’ is one of 10 brand new plays written especially for the National Theatre’s youth festival, Connections, by a selection of the best playwriting talent in the UK.

Level 3 students will perform the play, written by Suhayla El-Bushra, on Wednesday March 8 and Thursday March 9 in The Venue, the college’s unique theatre space. Performances begin at 7pm

‘FOMO’ follows the story of Dani and Josh, the perfect high school couple. Their friends look on in envy as their love story unfolds on social media. But when the government switches off the internet for reasons of national security, the truth of their relationship is revealed.

Told almost entirely through tweets, texts and status updates, ‘FOMO’ takes a light, humorous look at the futility of comparing your own life to someone else’s Instagram feed.

After Connections, the play will transfer to Warwick Arts Centre to be performed alongside other Midlands schools and colleges in April.

Performing Arts Lecturer at Walsall College and show director, Paul Evans, said: “Being part of a National Theatre project is a great opportunity for students to increase their experience of performing for an audience.”

Two dance students from the college have also received recognition, performing in the curtain raiser to Birmingham Hippodrome’s Red Shoes earlier this month.

Faye Bolan and Jake Rowley limber up before their appearance at Birmingham Hippodrome Level 3 students Faye Bolan and Jake Rowley, both 17 (left) took to the stage as part of an ensemble and performed a three-minute dance piece prior to the start of Matthew Bourne’s production.

The short piece was a new dance inspired by themes from the main show.

The curtain raiser was part of Hippodrome Creative’s continuing relationship with Sir Matthew and his company which, through his charitable arm – Re:Bourne – aims to highlight the emerging talent of local dancers and student choreographers.
