May the force be with you in Digbeth

Star Wars fans are in for a treat this weekend at a Birmingham venue for a worthwhile cause.

The Mockingbird Cinema and Kitchen and The Custard Factory in Digbeth are hosting a Star Wars-themed day to raise money for charity. The day is set to be filled with the force, with special screenings taking place throughout the event as well as appearances from Stormtroopers and other fan favourite Star Wars characters.

There will also be Blue Milk and Wookie Cookies to enjoy alongside John Williams music in the bar, a charity raffle with Star Wars prizes and much more.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be shown three times throughout the day. The movie, that came out in December, follows the story of a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction.

It is the key event in the Star Wars timeline that brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

The event will be raising money for the New Cross Cancer Unit in Wolverhampton and Macmillan Cancer Support. The team behind the Mockingbird Cinema chose to arrange the event after co-owner James Anderson Brown’s wife Emma was diagnosed with cancer in March 2016.

Emma went through 11 chemotherapy and 25 radiotherapy sessions and went into remission in December 2016. She is now a cancer survivor and James is keen to raise awareness of the work they do at the New Cross Cancer Unit.

He said: “When my wife became seriously ill a year ago, every day the term “hope” kept us going which seems to be at the core of the Star Wars and resonates with hardcore fans like myself.

“Emma is now in remission and I could not think of a better way by a fund-raising event around Star Wars to try thank all the amazing staff, nurses, consultants, just everyone who were so amazing in my wife’s personal care in the NHS service to raise funds for the New Cross Cancer Unit, as well as the wider cause in Macmillan Support.

“The support so far has been overwhelming. The 501st UK Garrison have amazingly agreed to attend the event between 12pm and 2pm, The Custard Factory have also been sensational in making this happen, with Disney allowing us to screen the film for charity and making this event happen for a great cause.

“The day is family friendly so I really hope to see fans old and new come along and have a great time.”
