Jaguar Land Rover set to launch all-new Range Rover model

Jaguar Land Rover has teased the launch of its latest new product, a mid-range Range Rover, in what is seen as another major boost for the West Midlands motor industry.

The new vehicle, dubbed the Velar, will be produced at the company’s Lode Lane plant in Solihull and will sit between the globally best-selling Evoque and the Sport.

The SUV, which is likely to sit somewhere between the £40,000 to £80,000 price bracket, will be the fourth model in the Range Rover family.

It will be similar in size to the Jaguar F-Pace, with which it shares the manufacturer’s IQ platform and much like the best-selling Jaguar, is intended to compete with the Porsche Macan and the BMW X6.

It is also further evidence of the company’s plan to introduce more new models to fill in the gaps within its model range so that it can properly compete with its German rivals.

The new model also explains JLR’s decision to switch the production of the Jaguar XE from Solihull to Castle Bromwich in order to free up capacity at the former.

The production could spell a further jobs boost for Lode Lane, and will certainly mean further work for the company’s complex supply chain.

JLR is typically not giving much away about the new car, which is being officially launched on March 1.

It has released a teaser image, which illustrates how the new vehicle will look in comparison to its sister products but little more is known at this stage.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Chief Design Officer, said: “We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”

The origin of the Velar name dates back to the first Range Rover prototypes of the Sixties, when the company pioneered the development of luxury off-roaders.

When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rovers, they chose the name Velar, which is derived from the Latin velare, meaning to veil or cover.
