Motorists are being warned of severe delays on the M6 northbound in Staffordshire after strong winds blew down trees onto the carriageway.

The section affected is between Junctions 12 (Gailey) and 13 (Stafford South).

Two lanes have had to be closed off to enable workers to remove the debris and there are long delays in the area, with stationary traffic stretching back several miles to near Junction 11a, the exit for the M6 Toll.

Highways England has estimated delays of 30 minutes against normal traffic times and has now revised estimates and said it is unlikely the scene will be clear until around 5.30pm. It had previously hoped the scene would be clear by 2.30pm.

Meanwhile, Birmingham Airport has said many flights have either been cancelled or are delayed due to the strong winds brought by Storm Doris.

It has advised passengers to check with their airlines ahead of departure.

Elsewhere, Arriva Trains Wales has said it has suspended services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham International (via Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street) until at least 4.30pm.

London Midland has cancelled its trains and told commuters simply not to travel.
