Traffic alert: Vehicle fire shuts M6

3pm Update

One lane of the northbound carriageway on the M6 after Junction 14 remains closed following the fire earlier today.

However, there are still delays of 50 minutes against normal traffic flows predicted for the stretch of motorway between Junctions 13 – 15.

The fire has caused serious damage to the carriageway and repairs are having to be made. Highways England has estimated that the scene won’t be clear until after 10pm.

It has advised motorists to avoid the area if possible and with the evening rush-hour likely to be impacted by the incident, to allow more time for journeys.

A lorry fire closed the M6 northbound this morning with traffic on the motorway affected throughout the morning rush hour because tins of dog food were exploding.

The motorway was closed between junctions 14 and 15, just south of Stoke-on-Trent while the fire was dealt with.

A tweet from the Central Motorway Police Group said: “M6 Nb closed. Everything diverting off at j14 onto the A34. Some of the tims (sic) of dog food are still exploding 🐶”

Police re-opened the southbound carriageway at 6.40am, and opened one lane northbound at 7.20am.

Highways England is forecasting traffic will be back to normal by 10.30am.
