Multi-million apartment scheme unveiled for Jewellery Quarter

How the Newhall Square scheme will look

Developers are seeking permission for 220 new apartments in the heart of Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter.

Spitfire Bespoke Homes plans to build the apartments in a new scheme off Newhall Street on what was effectively the former home of the city’s science museum – which was itself the former home of the Elkington electroplating works – before its relocation to Millennium Point.

The development site also includes a separate parcel of land in Charlotte Street, opposite UCB’s McIntyre House.

The plans follow a £45m land deal secured last year by Spitfire Properties, funded by partner IM Properties.

The multi-million-pound plan will see Spitfire deliver 221 apartments, together with six townhouses, associated retail and car parking.

The development will include a new square intended to create a sustainable open space where people can socialise.

The development proposes the following elements:
• Plot 1 – Charlotte Street Building – 79 apartments with ground level car parking for 61 spaces in an area of 1,623m² and a residents-only clubhouse (named Elkington House).
• Plot 2a – Newhall Street Building – Mixed-use development with 138 apartments, 3 retail/commercial spaces and 6 townhouses (named Wright House).
• Plot 2b – Whitmore Arm building with 4 apartments and ground level retail/commercial space (named Whitmore House).
• Re-levelling and landscaping to form new external square
• The gross internal floor area of the new buildings is 10,608m² for Elkington House, 477m² for Whitmore House and 7,103m² for Wright House.

Spitfire is hoping to start on site this year, with a view to the first apartments being delivered in 2018.

The plans have been designed by Associated Architects.

Director Richard Perry said: “Newhall Square will provide the final stage of development for a key site in the Jewellery Quarter Conservation area. We have worked closely with IM Properties and Spitfire Homes to design a scheme that will offer residents high-quality accommodation with a strong sense of community.”

Spitfire is no stranger to the city living scene, having been involved in major projects with Crosby Lendlease, Cala and Banner Homes.

IMP is involved in some of Greater Birmingham’s largest schemes including 55 Colmore Row, Blythe Valley Business Park, Mell Square Shopping Centre in Solihull and The Hub, home to Birmingham’s new Wholesale Markets.
