Leeds shopping centre named ‘Best in the World’

Victoria Gate in Leeds has been named as the Best Shopping Centre in the World at MIPIM 2017, having been opened just five months.

The development, spearheaded by Hammerson and launched in October  2016, cost £165m, and has now beaten off competition in Hong Kong, Osaka Japan and Guangzhou China to win the award.

Hailed as a “gamechanger” for the city on opening, and has created around 2,000 jobs.

A £30m supercasino launched earlier this year at the site, which features retailers including anchor tenant John Lewis, Anthropologie, The White Company, MIPIM Victoria Gate award

Around 75% of the retailers that Victoria brought to Leeds were new to the city, and it marked a return for anchor John Lewis, who had not had a presence in the city for decades.

Representatives from Hammerson and Acme London  collected their award in Cannes last night (pictured right).

Councillor Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council, said: “This is a very exciting acknowledgement of the vision behind Victoria Gate’s development and the quality and innovation of its build. It is testament to both Hammerson and our team at the council who worked so well together to deliver this innovative project.

“Victoria Gate, anchored by John Lewis, is a fantastic new addition to Leeds and the retail and leisure offer in the North of England and I’m delighted this has been recognised, despite strong competition from the striking new developments in Japan and China.”
