Shakespeare Putsman aims for £50m turnover

NEWLY merged Birmingham-based law firm Shakespeare Putsman has announced plans to almost double its turnover within the next four years, with further mergers set to form a key part of the strategy.

The firm, whose merger with Nottingham counterpart Berryman was completed today, is set to unveil a brand new look next March and the move is expected to spearhead further growth for the practice.

The merger with Berryman, first announced in August, has created a Midlands-wide firm employing 470 people and a turnover of c. £30m, with key locations in Birmingham, Stratford and Nottingham.

Paul Wilson, chief executive of the firm, said: “Within the next three to four years, the strategy is to grow revenue to £50m, by taking full advantage of our now very strong foothold in both the East and West Midlands and the creation of a leading Midlands law firm.

“The firm operates in a diverse range of practice areas, most notably Property, Dispute Resolution, Insurance and Banking, Corporate Services and Private Client, with a number of high profile and long-standing clients, and our strategy maintains the focus on outstanding client service in these key areas to support the growth strategy.”

He said the intention was to grow organically and through further mergers to achieve its new turnover target.

“At the same time, the firm will build on its strong local presence and the broad portfolio of legal services and excellent client service, and retain and hire the best Midlands talent,” he added.

Richard Brackenbury, who heads the Nottingham operation, said: “In Nottingham, the firm will continue to trade under the Berryman name and its excellent team will maintain its reputation as a pioneering, dynamic and ambitious law firm.”

The firm is shortly to announce a number of key hires and staff moves across its three locations.

Shakespeare Putsman underlined its ambitious growth strategy in July when it announced a merger with Stratford-upon-Avon’s Needham & James.

Shakespeare Putsman will continue to be led by Mr Wilson, who moved to Birmingham from Ireland in 1994. Before joining Putsmans in 2006, he was chief executive of the Thames Valley practice of law firm Olswang and from 2001 to 2005 he was chief executive at St Philip’s Chambers in Birmingham. He is also an executive member of the Birmingham Economic Development Partnership and a patron and member of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

Needham & James and Berryman have both become trading names of Shakespeare Putsman LLP.
