Applications open for second year of David Bucknall Scholarship

Applications have opened for the second year of the David Bucknall Scholarship, a scheme launched in memory of one of Birmingham’s most influential property professionals.

Set up by Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) and friends and family of David Bucknall, in partnership with Birmingham City University, it offers a combination of financial support and work experience, creating the opportunity for the successful student to embark on a career in the property and construction industry.

In financial terms, the David Bucknall Award is worth £10,500 over three years to a school leaver studying for a BSc or BEng in a built environment subject in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment at Birmingham City University.  In addition, RLB commits to supporting the winning student with guaranteed work experience, placements and careers guidance.

Iman Farah Mohamed from Moseley School sixth form received the inaugural David Bucknall Scholarship and started studying for a BSc in quantity surveying in September last year.  She says the scholarship has opened up a wealth of opportunity: “I had thought of an apprenticeship in construction or property because of the career opportunities offered by the investment going into infrastructure development, so it was really exciting to have the chance to study on a degree course.  One of the most important aspects of the scholarship is the support that RLB provides.  It’s one of the top firms in the industry and the experience I will gain from my internship will give a real boost to my career.”

Iman is also acting as an ambassador for Birmingham City University, going into schools to raise awareness of the award scheme and the industry as a career path.  She adds: “Many pupils don’t have enough confidence in themselves but I tell them that I am no different from them – if I can do it, so can they.”

David Bucknall was a key figure on the property scene in Birmingham and beyond.  He was instrumental in developing his firm, Bucknall Austin, into the international construction, management and property consultancy, Rider Levett Bucknall which now employs 3,600 people in 120 offices.  Adam Ellis-Morgan, managing partner of the Birmingham office says: “David was the ultimate professional who believed passionately in the importance of nurturing young talent and creating opportunities for those from less privileged backgrounds.  This is why the award in his memory is structured to offer far more than financial support.  We are committed to working with and supporting our David Bucknall scholars to make sure that they can get the very best start in their chosen profession.”

The scheme is open to selected schools and colleges and the application process involves students submitting a short video about the built environment.  If successful, they are invited for an interview with representatives of the scholarship fund and Birmingham City University. Simon Handley, associate dean from the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment said: “Birmingham City University recognises the work and influence provided by Mr Bucknall and we continue to collaborate with his friends, sector colleagues and Rider Levett Bucknall to offer this scholarship both in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

“The provision of this scholarship enables students who may not have the chance to experience Higher Education, the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
