Award-winning make-up designer offers unique combination of film & TV training courses and on-the-job experience

Budding makeup artists from Birmingham can find out if they have what it takes to become an Oscar nominee of the future, at a free event being held by twice Oscar nominated, internationally acclaimed Birmingham born make up artist Veronica McAleer on 25th Feb at the Custard Factory, Digbeth.

Top quality training has never been more affordable and it’s time for Birmingham to have this unique opportunity on its own doorstep.

MAKUP is the first and only makeup School outside London that’s offers hair and makeup training in Film and TV; not only to an exceptional standard but with personal tutoring from this multi award winning makeup Designer. The Academy is already training award winning makeup artists, so why not let the next one be you?

Veronica trained in makeup and hair design at BBC Pebble Mill in 1984, and began working in the film industry in 1990. Veronica has worked on over 40 films and countless television programmes. She has designed hair and makeup for 26 feature films working with actors such as Dame Judi Dench, Michael Caine, Keira Knightly, Colin Firth and Jennifer Connolly. Furthermore, she worked on the Oscar-nominated movie ‘Shakespeare in Love’, and big budget films such as ‘The Da Vinci Code’, ‘The Tourist’ and ‘Assassins Creed’. Most recently she was in America working with Paul Bettany on the hair and makeup design for his next TV series, ‘Manifesto’.

Last year Veronica decided to downscale her on-set work and to set up a unique Academy in The Custard Factory, Digbeth. This Midlands-base means that Veronica is able to provide industry expert level training at much more competitive rates than similar organisations in London.  MAKUP provides top-quality, intensive and above all practical training which is delivered in small classes. Students receive professional portfolios when they graduate, unique training on set etiquette and continuity skills, and relevant industry work experience. All of these features further enhance the students’ prospective career opportunities.

Veronica explains “having enjoyed a hugely rewarding career working at the highest level in film and TV, I decided I wanted to share my passion, skills and expertise with serious students of media makeup. I’m committed to fostering talent, dedication and ambition through a unique combination of comprehensive training and real work experience”.

MAKUP offers a 16-week, Intensive Set Ready course aimed at beginners and improvers. Short courses are available for those wanting refresher or top-up training in specific areas and the Academy also offers 1-day taster courses. A degree is definitely not a pre-requisite to enter and succeed in the media make-up industry. In reality it is practical skills, ability, aptitude and attitude that are most sought after.

Furthermore, Veronica has set up an Agency to arrange valuable work placements and to date 100% of Veronica’s graduates have received extensive relevant work experience in TV and film, developed vital industry connections and gone on to work in their chosen field.

If you are interested in becoming a hair and makeup artist in TV and film, MAKUP is holding an Open Day on Saturday 25th February when you can find out more about the courses, watch a live demonstration and meet current students. Discover what life is like on set and see how amazing transformations are achieved in the flesh!
