Birmingham-based contractor builds career foundations for students

23 UNIVERSITY students were treated to exclusive site tours this month at Birmingham City University’s (BCU) Curzon B construction site, led by contractor Willmott Dixon.

The £31 million extension – due to complete in October 2017 – is a significant scheme for the university and is being built using the latest BIM technology, making it the ideal site for student engagement visits.

Two groups of students visited the site: 12 Architectural Technology students from BCU and 11 BIM Masters students from the University of Wolverhampton.

BCU student, Sam George Taylor, thoroughly enjoyed the tour, he said: “Our site visit was an interesting and new experience, having the opportunity to see how a design develops into a working project was great. I liked seeing how the builders are using BIM models to work and reference from. I would be interested in visiting again when the project is further through the build stage.”

Upon completion, the Curzon B extension will house over 3,000 students and members of staff and feature more than 650 rooms, a student hub, lecture theatre and mock courtrooms.

Peter Owen, managing director at Willmott Dixon in the West Midlands, said: “Students need to learn the practical side of construction as well as the theoretical elements. We provide site tours to help students learn more about our work and the practical side of construction.”
