Big ticks for region's businesses

FOUR Yorkshire and Humber businesses have won National Big Tick awards for their positive impact and action in the community.

Hallmark, Marshalls, InterfaceFLOR and Northern Rail all picked up the Business in the Community Award for Excellence.

Halifax-based concrete landscapers Marshalls secured a Big Tick for the Skills in the Workplace Award and the Sustainable Marketing and Innovation Award, along with two reaccreditations. 

Flooring specialists InterfaceFLOR, based in Halifax, and Northern Rail  were awarded a Big Tick for Climate Change, while Hallmark walked away with an Environmental Leadership Award.  

Marshalls and InterfaceFLOR have been shortlisted for the overall Example of Excellence in their categories, to be announced at an event in London on July 5 that will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of HRH the Prince of Wales’s presidency of Business in the Community.

Fourteen other organisations were also big winners in the Yorkshire and Humber regional awards for initiatives that help improve businesses’ impacts on society and the environment. 

Two special awards were presented in recognition of outstanding individual achievement.

Chris Powell from The Cone Exchange in Harrogate was awarded the Marks and Spencer Sieff Award, which recognises an outstanding individual based in the community who has successfully collaborated with business to benefit society.

HRH The Prince of Wales announced via a pre-recorded message that Graham Holden, chief executive of Marshalls, is his 2010 Prince’s Ambassador in Yorkshire and Humber for his leadership and commitment to responsible business in the region.

Regional director for Business in the Community in Yorkshire and Humber, Liz Needleman, said:  “I congratulate all the businesses achieving a Big Tick and winners of the regional awards. 

“They are leading the movement for responsible business in our community and should be rightly proud of the positive impact that their programmes are having.”
