Rugby League has begun an exciting period as the game’s international strength brings a host of opportunities and puts the North firmly on the sporting map.

Jon Dutton

At TheBusinessDesk.com’s Sporting Lunch, Rugby League World Cup 2021 chief executive Jon Dutton, Rugby Football League chief executive Ralph Rimmer and Northern Powerhouse Partnership director Henri Murison will discuss the sport’s plans to maximise its international ambitions and add sporting fuel to the Northern Powerhouse’s global reach.

They will highlight the crucial positive influence that such great sporting events can bring to a region’s economy and why they feel the North is the right place to host the prestigious event in 2021. The leaders will debate what attracted the tournament to the North, how they feel businesses can benefit from it and how the region can ensure it has a lasting legacy.

The 16th Rugby League World Cup takes place in 2021, backed by £25m of Northern Powerhouse funding, with 80% of the matches taking place across the North.

The World Cup brings together the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments for the first time, in what will be the first major sporting tournament to be hosted by the UK post-Brexit.

Alongside that, the club game is getting an increasingly international flavour. French club Catalans Dragons are the Challenge Cup holders while two of the favourites for promotion to Super League are Toronto and Toulouse. Applications to join the league from New York and Ottawa are also currently being considered with more North American bids in the pipeline.

This event promises to be an interesting overview and insight into the world of sport and business; how the two areas collaborate to further cement the Northern Powerhouse agenda.
