Fielden Clegg Bradley won the New Building category

THE cream of building design has been recognised at the Leeds Architecture Awards.
 
Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios collected an award for Broadcasting Place, which houses Leeds Metropolitan University's new faculty of Art & Society, while Plumtree Mee collected one of two awards that went to the newly restored Mansion at Roundhay Park.
 
Leeds Town Hall designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, received the award for Leeds' Favourite Building
 
The Leeds Architecture Awards aim to recognise excellence in the design of places and spaces and promote the highest standards of architectural design.

The 2009 awards, which include projects completed during the last 12 months, were judged by a panel of experts led by Renato Benedetti of Macdowell+Bendetti and Leeds Civic Architect John Thorp MBE.
 
The winners were:
 
New Building: Broadcasting Place, designed by Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios, and Pudsey Grangefield School, designed by Mentor.
 
Highly commended: Fusion Millennium Village at Allerton Bywater designed by PRP Architects; Carnegie Village at Headingley Campus for Leeds Metropolitan University designed by GWP Architecture; and Rose Bowl designed by Sheppard Robson also for Leeds Metropolitan University.
 
Altered Building: The Mansion, Roundhay Park, designed by Purcell Miller Tritton.
 
Highly commended: Broad Gate designed by Fairhursts Design Group; St Margaret's Parish Church in Horsforth designed by Richard Crooks Partnership.
 
Conserved Building: The Mansion, Roundhay Park, designed by Plumtree Mee with PDS.
 
Highly commended: Dyneley Arms based in Otley, redesigned by Christopher Hearn Architect and DSP Architects.
 
Public Realm and Landscape: 'Connect', The Gateway's public art scheme, designed by artist Linda Schwab with Carey Jones; Albion Place Seating, designed by artist Peter Yarwood for Leeds City Council
 
Highly commended: Urban Developments' public realm improvements at 83a Otley Road designed by David R Bamford Architects and Smeedon Foreman.
 
Temporary Works: Green in the City designed by MEPC.
 
Coun Andrew Carter, leader of Leeds City Council, said: "What these awards show is that Leeds remains a city of iconic and innovative architecture - not just with new buildings but also with refurbishments of some of our architectural masterpieces.
 
"We are particularly proud that the Town Hall has been named the city's favourite building especially because it was voted for by the public."
 
The awards also recognised the commitment of Leeds Civic Architect John Thorp who is due to retire later this year, with a lifetime achievement award presented by Jean Dent, director of city development at Leeds City Council and Coun Carter.
