Christa Ackroyd and Harry Gration get behind Apprenticeship Awards

BBC Look North presenters Christa Ackroyd and Harry Gration are urging talented apprentices and their employers across Yorkshire to make their region proud by entering the National Apprenticeship Awards.

Harry and former apprentice Christa joined the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) and local apprentices from Leeds City College at Leeds Town Hall to encourage more apprentices to enter the awards.

Apprentices and their employers have got until Friday to enter this year’s awards.

Organised by NAS and supported by Leeds City Council, the awards celebrate the achievements of apprentices and the businesses that employ them.

Christa and Harry will also step out on stage to host the regional awards ceremony at Leeds Town Hall on May 20 where winners from each of the six categories including ‘Regional Apprentice of the Year’ and ‘Small Employer of the Year’ will go forward to represent the region at the national finals in London this summer.

A team of chef and catering apprentices from Leeds City College will also be assisting with the hospitality provided on the night.

Ms Ackroyd said: “As a former apprentice myself, I know at first hand how apprenticeships provide a terrific career boost – giving young people the unique opportunity to learn and gain qualifications whilst they earn money.

“I’m really looking forward to hosting the regional Apprenticeship Awards and meeting some of the outstanding talent from our region. Hopefully we can unearth some real stars who can go on to make Yorkshire proud on the national stage later in the year.”

Nick Wilson, regional director for the NAS in Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “With more than 31,000 people starting apprenticeship schemes in Yorkshire in 2009, we want to recognise the valuable contribution that apprentices make to the local economy. With the nomination deadline almost upon us, it’s important that entries are sent as soon as possible so all our fantastic apprenticeships in the region can receive the accolades they deserve.”
