Breaking news: Go-ahead for Humber Gateway wind farm

PLANS for a £700m wind farm off the Yorkshire coast were given the go-ahead by the Government today.

The green light for the Humber Gateway wind farm is the second major boost this year for efforts to create a green energy hub in the region, following the decision by Siemens last month to choose Hull as its proposed site for a wind turbine plant.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne said: “Offshore wind not only provides clean, green, secure energy, the investment that comes with it is great for the UK economy too.

“A new wind farm off the Humberside coast will be a further jobs and investment boost for the region, hot on the heels of Siemens’ announcement of plans to develop the Port of Hull.”

The Humber Gateway wind farm will be developed by power generator E.ON and host up to 77 turbines, generating enough power for around 150,000 homes making it one of the largest offshore wind farms in the UK.

Michael Lewis, managing director for E.ON’s European renewables business, said: “This is really exciting news for us as we see offshore wind as an important part in the future energy mix of the UK.

“It’s essential that we continue to invest in renewable technologies and this is further recognition of our expertise in the sector generally and in offshore wind in particular.”
