Non-executives are a luxury few know how to use properly

NON-executive directors (NEDs) are like bidets - quite a few people fancy having one but many don't know how to use them properly - according to Jo Haigh of business advisory firm ATF.

Her comments come on the back of a report commissioned by Sheffield-based MGR - the accounting division of Atf - and Leeds-based hlw McCombie Commercial Lawyers, which showed that business people are more likely to consult their husband/wife or partner for business advice than their NED.

It's true that NED's can add great value and give excellent support and a sounding board to company directors. The Yorkshire Association of Business Angels has a register of more than 70 angel members who would like to offer their experience and knowledge to companies in the region and help add value.
