THE controversial £40m New Victoria Place development on the site of the former Odeon cinema in Bradford has won planning approval.

Bradford councillors voted in favour of the scheme at a meeting this week which will now see the demolition of the former Odeon cinema to make way for a glass-fronted city centre development boasting offices, a 100-bed hotel, bars cafes and community leisure space around a central square.

As I look out of my office window over the imfamous Westfield hole in the ground/ Lets hope it gets built. Too many artist impressions and projects that never get started/finished in Bradford. The public have lost all confidence that these projects will ever happen.

Jonathan Forrest

Exciting - and badly needed - as this project is, it is only part of the regeneration jigsaw. The much-maligned masterplan needs to be judged in its entirety. Nevertheless, full marks to Bradford council for backing this key element.

Simon Mountford

Here we go again! Another grand scheme is being promoted. Remember the West End project, the failed earlier propposal that is now a large wasteland in the centre of the city, Oh! and how about the many Odsal Super Stadium plans long forgotten. No anchor stores - the major retailers will not commit to a city with such a low socio-economic profile, and those that do go for the low risk, low cost sheds off Canal Road. Get real Bradford. Development jobs are fine, but what is needed is sustainable jobs from business and consumer based activity. Which sector of affluent people will travel into Bradford to shop or be entertained when Leeds is so close. Dream on.

Trevor Turner

This is a fine development, and much needed in Bradford. Using sustainable materials like a lightweight natural stone cladding www.stonepanels.com would bring huge financial and aesthetic benefits to the project.

Paul Griffiths

Love it or loathe it, frankly the decision will come as welcome relief to many people who wish to see real progress being made and not just endlessly debated. As a business based within the city we applaud this particular grasping of the nettle. Too many times the grand visions for our city have been watered down to the extent that they become bland and meaningless. Bradford; ‘its time to be bold’.

Martin Fisher

Fond though I am of the Odeon building, I can nonetheless see the wisdom of a project which creates both a geographic icon and a wealth of opportunities for jobs. But then was that not the intention of St Peter's Hall???
