LEEDS Bradford International Airport has called on the region's business community to back its plans to launch flights linking Yorkshire to the USA.
The airport this week unveiled its Project America campaign in association with the British American Business Council aimed at attracting a US airline to fly out of Leeds Bradford to New York within five years.

Harrogate's many International Conferences and Exhibitions would benefit from such direct services to bring more inbound US delegates. However for Delegates other parts of the world we need restoration of the Heathrow link which was stolen by Lufthansa. Even then we will also need a proper Airport Express Bus service - not one every 90 minutes!

A great idea but in terms of inward investment to the region, linking LBA to Heathrow and London City would probably be a better bet

Agreed LBA needs to improve what it has currently. No LHR service doesn't help. Will these new NYC service also carry freight?
Jonathan Forrest
I would prefer regular and realistically priced flights to London City or LHR as an option against the train. For all long haul there are already regular flights to use Schipol of CDG as a hub

A good idea. Sadly on recent trips to Far East & North America had to go night before to Manchester to connect through a hub either Paris or "horrible " Heathrow to get to my destination. LBIA is an unfriendly airport charging for trolleys liquid bags and the security assumes everyone is a terrorist. The drop of point in inclement weather is the longest walk of any airport. It'll never compete against Manchesterand so in reality should stay a Jet2 and Ryannair airport. The loss of meaningful scheduled services to London and Paris is its downfall.

It's a great idea, but Pravin's point is spot on; we could end up paying through the nose for the convenience...

Whilst it would be great in theory in the current climate I can't see this happening. Also what sized planes can actually land in all weathers at LBA? A more urgent priority would be to restart a service to London Heathrow so we can connect to the rest of the world! In any event LBA can't cope with the existing traffic; witness the queues at security clearance.

A good initiative especially for North and West Yorkshire companies. My staff and I travel regularly to the US and have to cope with significantly longer journeys by train or high car parking fees (versus a local taxi or drop off) by using Manchester or worse LHR. Price may be a concern if there is only one carrier from Leeds though.
Pravin Mirchandani
A good initiative. What sort of planes are intended for use? Can they be accommodated by the present runway?
Jeremy Shulman
In my experience, LBA cannot cope with existing traffic, so hope they first improve their infrastructure before taking on more! I would value being able to fly to LHR above flying to the USA.

Its about time. Why should we go to Manchester, London or even Amsterdam to cross the Atlantic.
