120-bed hotel set for green light despite objections

A 120-bed hotel planned by Amsterdam chain Vastint Hospitality is set to receive the green light despite objections.

The Moxy brand hotel was announced in 2015, when Vastint acquired the site for development from insurance giant Hiscox.

A Moxy Hotel, from the Marriott International family, is planned for the site, despite objections relating to its proximity to the grade II-listed Black Swan pub on Peasholme Road.

The local Guildhall planning committee have reportedly written to councillors objecting to the “excessive” scale of the building. According to York Press, they also said that the materials planned for use at the hotel were not in-keeping with the surrounding area.

17 letters of objection have also been recieved.

Historic England voiced its concerns that the site would be a “visual clash” between the new hotel building and the Hiscox insurance building adjacent, although Hiscox itself has given the proposals its backing.
