6 things to do on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day – it just creeps up on you, doesn’t it? You have probably sorted a card and present out, well, we hope you have. But how to spend your day? Here are a few ideas to get you going and we’re sure your mum, wife and grandma will love them…

Afternoon Tea
You can’t go wrong with an afternoon tea; what isn’t there to love about miniature treats and drinking tea in a super civilised way? At most venues, you can swap the tea for champagne instead, making it an even better way to spend the afternoon. Many hotels and venues now host regular afternoon tea events, so you won’t have to look far to find one. In fact, Malmaison, Browns and Radisson Blu all host their own.

Head to a show
There are loads of incredible shows to go and see in the area right now. Even if they’re not on this weekend, we’re sure your mum will love to have something to look forward to. Lord of the Dance and Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine are both taking to the stage at Leeds Grand Theatre over the next few weeks and The Full Monty and Jane Eyre are soon to be taking to the stage in Sheffield.

Cook a meal
If you’re on a budget, you could always invite your mum round for a lovely dinner and put to work the skills she has taught you over the years. If you fancy keeping it traditional, you could always make your Sunday lunch a bit more exciting. Try changing gravy for red wine sauce for beef dinners, exchange roast potatoes for dauphinoise ones and even throw your mum’s favourite pudding into the mix for dessert to make it a special occasion.

Head to the museum
You could always treat your mum to a bit of culture on Mother’s Day. Head to your local museum or art gallery and spend the day getting to know more about history, the future and everything in-between. Alternatively, head to a National Trust property and enjoy the afternoon exploring the grounds with the family. North Yorkshire boasts Ormesby Hall, Mount Grace Priory and Nunnington Hall and Keighley is home to East Riddlesden Hall.

Enjoy a workshop
Another great way to spend Mother’s Day is by getting stuck in at a local workshop. Either head along or book tickets and enjoy. There are a range of workshops in Yorkshire to get involved in. Yorkshire Wine School offers a range of wine tasting experiences, get creating at Peagreen Pottery in Malton or head along one of Going Digital’s photography classes.

A long afternoon walk
There’s nothing like a bit of fresh air to set the mood for a day of bonding with my mum and other family members. Get your walking boots out, grab the dog and fill a backpack with snacks and head out on a long afternoon walk. There are loads of walks in the region to enjoy. But if you’re close to Leeds, you might enjoy a visit to Harewood House Gardens which features a wide range of rare and exotic plants, a rose garden and the Himalayan Garden.
