My Yorkshire: Claire Ackers, Adesse Search

Where do you live / where are you from?
I’m from the wrong side of the Pennines originally, but moved to Leeds twelve years ago, via Birmingham and Bordeaux. I’ve lived in Headingley, Chapel Allerton and Holmfirth, and have settled in Farsley with my husband and kids.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire, and why?
Brimham Rocks is one of my favourite places on earth. You’ve got to go on a quiet day though, otherwise the mystery and atmosphere is lost. If I ever get around to writing a novel, I’ll base it there.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
We had our wedding breakfast at the Gray Ox in Liversedge, so that was pretty special.
I also love Kendells Bistro for a treat. My best friends from school have just opened a pizza restaurant in Farsley, so I’d better say ‘Grumpy’s’ too!

What is your most Yorkshire trait?
My brother and I have an annual Yorkshire Pudding eating contest on Boxing Day. Does that count?! Apart from that, being awed by the glorious countryside, we get out and about every weekend.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.
Jelly Tots were invented by accident in 1967, by Horsforth scientist Brian Boffey.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
I greatly admire the author Joanne Harris, who was born in Barnsley but now lives in Huddersfield. I’ll also read anything by Kate Atkinson, who was born in York.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
I climbed Ingleborough a couple of weeks ago and got lost in thick cloud on the summit for half an hour, completely disorientated despite 2 compasses. Luckily a friendly fellrunner got me on the right path.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
My husband is from Bury originally, and I persuaded him to move to Leeds, so him I suppose!

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?
Those steps up to Whitby Abbey! I walked up and down them 3 times whilst trying to kickstart labour with my son!
