People: COO appointed at logistics group; Law firm strengthens construction team; and more

Emma Dempsey

Emma Dempsey has been appointed chief operating officer at Clipper Logistics.

Dempsey has held roles at Accenture, Marks & Spencer and Unipart, has more than 20 years’ experience working in supply chain.

In her new role, she will be responsible for customer operations projects, IT delivery, quality implementation and the development of operational innovation.

She said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Clipper team. They have a fantastic reputation, and the way that they focus on their customers is what makes them industry leaders and true innovators. I’m looking forward to putting my energy, knowledge and expertise towards the future success of the Clipper business.”

Phil Morrison and Jayne Smiles

Law firm Shulmans has strengthened its construction team with internal promotions and the creation of two new roles.

Phil Morrison, who joined the firm in 2013, has been promoted to partner after being head of construction at the firm for four years. Morrison boasts more than 25 years of experience in the sector, advising both large private and public sector bodies on the delivery of infrastructure projects. Working on contentious and non-contentious matters, his specific expertise spans adjudications, High Court and County Court proceedings, alternative dispute resolution, arbitration and residential building disputes.

Joining Shulmans in 2015 and with more than ten years’ experience in the construction sector, Jayne Smiles has been promoted to the position of associate. Smiles’ work incorporates varied and complex issues for leading clients in the developer, contractor, investment fund, banking, retail, engineering, commercial and housebuilder sectors. Her expertise lies in bespoke forms of construction procurement documents, in particular negotiating and advising on contracts for complex projects, security packages, and documenting project bank and escrow accounts.

In addition to the internal promotions, two new job roles are to be created to expand the team, to include a new solicitor and a specialist construction law trainee solicitor.

Colin Glass

Colin Glass, the founding partner of accountants Winburn Glass Norfolk and prolific non-executive director, has been presented with his OBE for services to business start-ups and entrepreneurship at Buckingham Palace by HRH Princess Anne.

Glass attended the palace with his wife Vanessa, and his two children Adam and Deborah.

He is passionate about assisting start-ups and companies which have the capability of growing into sustainable and profitable SMEs, as well as mentoring young and upcoming entrepreneurs.

Glass is currently a non-executive director of The British Business Bank, an independent company owned by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Israel Business, North East (formerly the British Israel Chamber of Commerce), and is chairman of Shine, a local social enterprise based in Harehills, Leeds.
