Former pub and hotel given residential revamp

A former historic pub and hotel has been transformed into an apartment complex.

The development will create 12 apartments at the former Criterion pub and hotel on Hessle Road in Hull.

Work on the complex is nearly complete on the self-contained one-bedroom flats and studio apartments.

The complex will also make room for retail space in the old barroom section of the building, adding to the growing number of businesses being established on Hessle Road.

Contractors Morriss Construction Ltd are currently renovating the site after developers acquired it in December 2015.

Adam Morriss, the managing director of Morriss Construction said: “This iconic corner building is vital to the look and feel of the area. And when you talk to folk around here, it’s clear that The Criterion still has an important place in many people’s hearts.

“Throughout the refurbishment, we’re carefully preserving the style of this listed building while also making sure that each of the new apartments provides the very highest modern standards.”

Developer Lior Bibi explained: “We wanted to create apartments ready to be lived in. That’s why we’re equipping each property with all the facilities people need, including furniture, fridge, washing machine and dryer.

“It’s about setting a new standard for rented accommodation in this part of Hull. And with everything you could need right on your doorstep, it’s a fantastic place to be. Hessle Road is booming with amenities, including restaurants, shops and bars. It offers easy access in and out of Hull and the town centre is just a seven-minute bus ride away. This really is the perfect location for professionals living and working in this area.”

The Hull Daily Mail mentioned that it was one of a spate of pub closures in the city over the past year including the Blacksmith Arms in Naylor’s Row and Skippers Tavern in Bransholme as part of the Hull Local Plan.

The Campaign for Real Ale pushed for greater regulations around the change of use of pubs into residential, leading to the protection of eight pubs in the city last year.
