Get into the groove with Bank Holiday beats at Angelica

Angelica, based in Trinity Leeds, has announced its latest DJ events taking place at the rooftop bar in the city centre.

Celebrating the start of the Bank Holiday weekend, DJ Greg Wilson will be playing at Angelica from 8pm today. Originally from Merseyside, Wilson became renowned for his influence in the 80s with the introduction of the electro scene in Manchester. He is now enjoying the resurgence of the current disco and re-edit movement, as played out in his latest sets.

In the early eighties, Wilson became a pioneer of mixing in the UK, and by 1983 he became the first ‘dance music’ specialist, hired for a regular weekly session at Manchester’s now legendary Haçienda club.

The North West based DJ was also instrumental in breaking the new electronic, post-disco records coming out of New York, a sound he dubbed ‘Electro-Funk’. He’ll be bringing his famous mixes and classic hits to the Angelica set this Bank Holiday.

Mark Morris, general manger of Angelica, said: “Greg is one of the DJs we’ve been so keen to get to play a set at Angelica since we started our music evenings. He is one of UK’s finest, and it’s going to be a privilege to watch his set on Friday 26 May. We can’t think of a better way to start a long weekend in Leeds.”

Angelica has also announced the launch of Café Del Mar, which will start on Sunday. Marking the start of the summer season, this Ibizian inspired evening will take place every Sunday from 3pm.

Founded in 1980, Café Del Mar has become infamous for its Balearic ambient style and easy listening music. Originally a bar in Sant Antonio, the music, ethos and relaxed vibe has led to several chill-out compilation albums and a global music movement, pioneering the chill-out genre since 1994.

Morris said: “Café del Mar is and always will be a Ibizian rite of passage; a quintessential experience for Ibiza first timers and veterans alike. A lot of our guests will remember their first time at Café Del Mar and we want to bring that same experience and vibe to Angelica in Leeds, every single Sunday.

“With the perfect ambience, amazing drinks and the best DJ sets, we could even rival the real thing. The only thing missing is the Mediterranean ocean, but we do have some seriously stunning sunsets of the city’s skyline seen from our outdoor terrace to make up for it.”
