Bacon business shuts down West Yorkshire factory

Difficult trading conditions have forced a Damika-owned bacon factory in Huddersfield to close its doors this week.

Meat processing firm British Bacon Supplies is closing its doors in the town tomorrow, Friday 30 June.

The Queens Mill Trading Estate site was “unable to operate at sustainable efficiency levels” according to trade publication Just-Food, following added pressure after the group’s Halifax factory was flooded last year.

It is unclear at this stage how many staff have been affected, but it has been reported that staff were informed last month of the decision to close the plant.

The company said in a statement: “Despite investing heavily in the factory over the past five years, difficult trading conditions have meant that we are unable to operate at sustainable efficiency levels.

“Our staff have been informed and are being supported throughout the process. Where appropriate employees will be offered jobs at other locations within our group.”

“Damika is part of a large strong group of companies and therefore production will move to highly efficient manufacturing sites within the group.

“We will continue to provide all of our customers with first-class bacon, an impeccable service and competitive prices.”

Damika have been contacted by TheBusinessDesk.com for comment.
