York takes centre stage in new ITV drama

Kay Mellor takes a break from directing to visit the Visit York Information Centre.

York has taken centre stage as the location for a new ITV drama by award-winning director Kay Mellor, featuring an all-star cast.

Girlfriends, starring Zoë Wanamaker of Harry Potter and My Family fame,  Miranda Richardson, who has played roles in Mapp & Lucia and Churchill, and Downton Abbey’s Phyllis Logan, is being filmed this month.

Girlfriends is a contemporary story of Linda, Sue and Gail as they struggle with the responsibilities that come with being a modern woman of a certain age.

Mellor, who was directing in York today, said: “I wanted to show off this beautiful Yorkshire city in all its glory.  With its stunning architecture, vibrancy, brilliant restaurants and café bars and lovely riverside York was such a good choice.  I knew as soon as I brought our cast here they would fall in love with it.”

Kay Hyde, head of communications, Make It York, added: “We were thrilled to welcome the production team to York and we’re excited to see York on film when Girlfriends comes to our TV screens.  Kay’s award-winning writing is loved across the UK and this new series is sure to help put York in front of millions of potential visitors.”
