Sam Rainey, commercial director of advertising and marketing agency Home, based in Leeds.

He is a member of the Leeds Community Foundation’s 100 Club, a patronage scheme for individuals who are motivated to make a difference in Leeds.
Here, he discusses what he loves about the city, and why he’s involved in the foundation.

What is your favourite thing about Leeds?

Variety. There are so many great things to do in the city centre with some of the best shopping, culture, eating and drinking in the UK, all in a very compact city centre. But in 15 minutes I can also be out in rolling countryside, and there’s a huge amount of choice for a keen golfer like me. Anything I want to do, I can do it in Leeds.

What is the worst thing about the city?

Outdoor space – although it has started to get better in recent years. As a city, I think we need to commit to more quality outdoor public spaces that are great for events and nice places to hang out and meet.

Why are you a member of Leeds Community Foundation’s 100 Club?

We wanted to give something back to the city where we were founded. As a business that takes both our CSR responsibilities and maintaining a positive culture seriously, The 100 Club supports us in both of these areas. It’s also a great opportunity for us to meet lots of like-minded people from a wide range of businesses and backgrounds too.

One thing we definitely underestimated was the quality of events that the Leeds Community Foundation put on – which have been really impressive so far.

What community issues are important to you?

Making sure people are healthy and happy, whatever their position in the community. At Home, we joined in with Mental Health Awareness Week this year, as being a predominantly young workforce, we felt there’s added importance to making sure our staff get the support they need to thrive. We were lucky enough to attend Leeds Community Foundation’s ‘Leeds Leads: Encouraging Happy Young Minds’ event with Prince Harry earlier this month too!
