Major acid leak at Hull dock overnight

Sixty firefighters attended a major leak of hydrochloric acid at King George Dock in Hull overnight.

The leak created a vapour cloud, which prompted the fire service to ask that all residents close windows and doors for their safety.

A call was made to Humberside Fire and Rescue at 22.15pm last night and five fire pumps, along with three special appliances, attended the scene. One crew now remains on site, decanting the rest of the chemicals away.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said it was a major leak. She added: “We haven’t been able to establish the amount yet – that will be done once it is all decanted.

“There was a vapour cloud and this was tested and we found it to be of no danger.”
