My Yorkshire: Douglas Main, The Bigger Boat

Douglas Main is creative director at Mirfield-based digital marketing agency The Bigger Boat
Where do you live/where are you from?
I’m originally from Dewsbury, but I now live in Scissett, near Denby Dale.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
I think my absolute favourite place has to be Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but I studied in Leeds and also love the city – we’re spoilt for choice here!

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
I love good grub and I really fancy trying Michael O’Hare’s restaurant, The Man Behind The Curtain – I’ve heard some amazing things.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
I once had a meal in Japanese restaurant Little Tokyo, when suddenly the lights went out and two of the waiters started having a lightsabre duel – I’ve never seen anything like it!

What is your most Yorkshire trait?
I have a dark sense of humour and an ability to make light of the worst situations.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region
Denby Dale holds the Guinness World Record for the largest ever meat and potato pie, at 20ft long.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
Easy! Geoffrey Boycott, a real-life living legend who makes me smile whenever I hear him and his ‘stick of rhubarb’ on the radio.

First experience of Yorkshire (for non-Yorkshire folk)
I would advise anybody to get themselves straight up to anywhere situated in the spectacular Yorkshire Dales – when the sun is shining there really is no better place to be.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
Leaving.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
The Burnley Express. Or Jimmy Anderson, England’s greatest Test Match bowler!

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?
The tightness – in reality we’re a really generous bunch, especially when it comes to sharing our opinions!
