Transformation for former Sheffield steel works site

An old steelworks factory on the edge of Sheffield city centre is being transformed into a complex of apartments and studios.

Refurbishment of Speedwell Works in Sidney Street – part of the city’s Cultural Industries Quarter –provides rented accommodation for young professionals and students.

Lettings are now being taken for 16 furnished two-bedroom apartments and 18 one-bedroom apartments and studios.

It is the first phase of Alsop Fields, a £10m project by Sheffield-based Elmsdale Estates for accommodation, offices for the high tech and creative sectors and places to eat and drink in an area between The Moor and Shoreham Street.

The new lease of life for Speedwell Works has been generated by renovating three storeys of former industrial premises around a central courtyard that is due to feature a café and two other commercial units next to the River Porter.

Andrea Marsden, head of residential at City Estates, which includes Elmsdale Estates, said: “Speedwell Works offers boutique-style apartments and studios with a character in keeping with the surrounding vibrant quarter.

“It is luxury furnished accommodation in an excellent location at an extremely competitive price that is ideal for young professionals and students.”

Once the Samuel Warren Speedwell Steel Works, the development is one of four buildings that will comprise Alsop Fields, a mix of new buildings and refurbished old factories being transformed by Elmsdale Estates and taking its name from an area around Sidney Street in the 18th century.

Marketing agency Jaywing has already moved into the old Albert Works, and Speedwell Works will be joined later this year by offices forming No. 77 @ Alsop Fields and Niche Buildings @ Alsop Fields, featuring 44 studios and apartments for students and other residents, plus three commercial units, on the site of the former Niche nightclub.

The whole development is scheduled to be finished by the end of November.
