PwC to close its Sheffield office

Big Four firm PwC is to close its Sheffield office next year, with all 74 staff members being relocated to Leeds.

The closure of the office comes just three years after it opened its doors in its location in the city at St Paul’s Place. At the time, the firm made it very clear they were proud to be the only one of  the Big Four to have a Sheffield city centre presence.

PwC has also confirmed that its Hull assurance teams will be moving to Leeds but its tax accounting services team will remain in that office, on Wellington Street West, for up to two years.

The news comes as the firm confirmed several national closures to relocate staff to larger offices, despite a new office opening in Manchester today and a new office to be opened in Birmingham next year.

A spokesman for the firm said PwC committed to new or additional office space to boost regional headcount by a further 1,250 people. They said “new flagship offices” will open in Manchester today and in Birmingham in 2018. Offices in cities such as Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds and Reading have already been expanded.

Andy Ward, PwC Sheffield office senior partner, said: “We are committed to supporting our clients in Sheffield, and our redeployed employees will work with other PwC colleagues to provide a broader range of services to help clients in Yorkshire with the issues and opportunities they face.

“Given our employees are equipped with a laptop and smartphone, and often work from client offices and other remote locations, we are consolidating our regional presence into a smaller number of large offices around the UK, such as Leeds.

“We’re bringing together our people and technology in these offices to deliver a wider range of integrated services in a way that best suits what our clients want.

“PwC is expanding its presence outside London to match the changing footprint of our clients and make the most of new opportunities in fast growing regions and the firm has accelerated its investment in the UK regions.

“In 2017, 55% of our graduate intake was recruited into roles outside London and that will rise to 60% in 2018. We have recruited nearly a thousand new staff outside London and are committed to new or additional office space to increase our regional headcount by a further 1,250 people.”
