York becomes second city in the region to refuse Uber licence renewal

York City Council has refused to renew Uber’s licence, becoming the second Yorkshire city to make this decision in a matter of days.

The council’s Gambling, Licensing and Regulatory Committee yesterday rejected Uber’s application to renew its private hire operator’s licence, citing concerns about a data breach that is currently under investigation and the number of complaints it had received about the service.

The taxi firm had its licence suspended in Sheffield licence after the council said it has failed to respond to requests about the management of the company.

Uber has 21 days to decide whether to appeal against the York decision. The company was granted an operator’s licence by the City of York in December 2016 and is due to expire on Christmas Eve.

Uber, which is already fighting a ban in London, can operate until December 18 in Sheffield and can also appeal against that decision.
