Gym limbers up for launch at city centre development

A new gym concept will open in the transformed Stonebow House development in York City Centre later this year.

It will be delivered by motive8, which designs, installs and manages health and fitness facilities.

The gym will lease 8,800 sq ft on the remodeled ground floor and will offer a full range of gym equipment alongside studio space for classes, a spa recovery zone and a bar and restaurant.

Stonebow House is being developed by Wetherby-based Oakgate Group with external works expected to be finished in spring this year.

Motive8’s managing director, Nick Sadler, who set up the company in 2000, said: “I am so excited to bring this project to York and to provide an outstanding facility. I also hope that once we are up and running we can start to work closely with the community and support local projects enabling all ages to live well and be active. This place will be a lifestyle, not just a gym.”

Richard France, managing director of the Oakgate Group, added: “Motive8 will offer a unique fitness facility, being completely different to any currently available in York and will complement the transformation of Stonebow House.

“The remodeled Stonebow House will help in the continued regeneration of this part of the city. It will link the prime retail area of Parliament Street with the emerging Hungate quarter and the thriving Fossgate area.”

Planning permission was granted last year for the complete transformation of the building to provide two levels of retail and leisure space, totalling 31,500 sq ft. Above this, the former office space is being transformed into 17 apartments.

An announcement on the remainder of the commercial space is expected soon.

York-based Lawrence Hannah is sole agent marketing the commercial space.

Stonebow House was built in 1964, following York’s slum clearance programme, and designed by Wells, Hickman and Partners. It has had a chequered history in the eyes of York residents and building experts and has often featured in worst building lists in the UK because of its imposing nature.
