Weekender: Family lawyer to auction designer clothes for charity

Leeds-based Marilyn Stowe is one of the UK’s well-known family lawyers, and following the 2017 sale of her firm – Stowe Family Law – she is now auctioning off her collection of designer clothes in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds.

Stowe had a fantastic career in law and built up a stellar international client base for her firm, which originated in Yorkshire and opened up further offices across the UK.  She also wrote four books and appeared regularly in the media, including ITV’s This Morning as a family law expert, on BBC Worldwide network and Sky News.

Outside her legal career, Stowe said: “My hobbies, apart from looking after my husband, son and two dogs, have been distance running and purchasing beautiful designer clothes – both were great for stress release!”

The collection consists of over fifty lots of  Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbags, Christian Louboutin shoes, and tailored dresses, suits and coats by Givenchy, Chanel, Roland Mouret, Victoria Beckham and Gucci.

Stowe added: ‘This sale consists of the best clothes I have collected, donated in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice who took care of my late father, Arnold Morris, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the same time that my mother, Estelle Morris, was also terminally ill from a diabetic illness. They passed away within 12 days of each other in January 2013. The proceeds of this sale will all go to St Gemma’s, for the part they played in three bleak, dark months following my father’s diagnosis when none of us knew how best to help him.”

The collection will be up for auction in the vintage costume and textiles sale at Tennants Auctioneers in North Yorkshire on 10 February.
