Leeds 2023 team to reveal Capital of Culture bid legacy

Supporters of the tabled Leeds 2023 European Capital of Culture bid are being invited to an event to hear how the plans outlined in the city’s bid book document will be moved forward, following the European Commission’s decision to remove the UK from its competition in November.

After a positive vote from Leeds City Council last week, the first steps in a new cultural legacy for Leeds, which will celebrate the city’s communities, cultural diversity and artistic excellence, are under way.

A public event will be held at Leeds Town Hall on 31 January from 4pm to 6pm, where details of how the work started through the bid process will be moved forward will be revealed for the first time.
This will include an exclusive announcement on the initial projects that will be supported under this legacy.
The event will bring together bid sponsors and stakeholders, along with members of the public. It will be hosted by a panel of Leeds 2023 spokespeople who will be rallying for the continued support of the people of Leeds to make the most of the city’s strong cultural offering.

Cllr Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “There is no doubt that it was huge blow when Leeds was unexpectedly denied the chance to bid to become European Capital of Culture.

“However, in true Leeds style, the city has responded with characteristic passion and resilience. There is a determination not to see the unprecedented enthusiasm and energy which has built behind the bid go to waste.

“Our bid has become a tremendously powerful catalyst for a whole new cultural conversation across our city which in turn has sparked some incredibly original and inventive ideas from arts organisations, businesses and the public.

“This event will be about ensuring those ideas are brought together and channeled into a new and unique celebration of Leeds which will give the best of the city’s culture a chance to shine on a stage we all know it deserves.

“It will also be about showing the world that Leeds is a city that will continue to embrace and cherish the many partnerships and connections and friends we have made across Europe over many years.”

Speakers at the event will be announced via the Leeds 2023 social media channels.
