Plans submitted to develop church into 52 apartments

Planning permission is being sought to convert House Church on York Street, Leeds, into 52 one and two-bedroom apartments.

The application submitted by Carter Jonas on behalf of Leeds City Apartments seeks full planning permission for the conversion and extension of Hope Church to residential and retail use.

The development proposes a residential led scheme comprising 52 apartments units along with a local retail unit (2,195 sqft) on the brownfield site on the edge of Leeds City Centre.

The planning document states that the 0.5-acre site, which is to the east of Quarry House (the Department of Work and Pensions Leeds office) is considered to be appropriate for residential development and can provide a windfall to contribute to the housing land requirement for Leeds.

The proposed development includes 41 parking spaces within the proposed basement and lower ground floor to serve the 52 apartments.

It says the development will provide benefits including the redevelopment of a vacant building within the city centre, provision of housing to meet local needs in a highly sustainable and accessible location, provision of local jobs in the construction industry, additional consumer spending within the local area and physical environmental improvements including improvements to the external appearance of the new building.
