York tops list of best places to live in Britain

York has been named as the Best Place to Live in Britain by The Sunday Times.

The city topped the list due to its “perfect mix of heritage and hi-tech”.

A range of factors were taken into account, from jobs, schools and broadband speed to culture, community spirit and local shops, in order to compile the definitive top locations to live.

House prices in York have risen 6.3% in a year, according to the guide, to an average of £301,320.

The city is also the UK’s first Gigabit City, offering broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps (one gigabit, or 1,000 megabits, per second) to businesses and tens of thousands of homes.

The Sunday Times described it as a “mini-metropolis with cool cafes, destination restaurants, innovative companies – plus the fastest internet in Britain”.
