Removals and storage firm marks half a century with record year

A removals and storage firm is marking half a century in business with a record performance despite what it called a backdrop of difficult market conditions linked to a slow property market and Brexit.

McCarthy’s Removals and Storage was set up in 1968 by Mick and Margaret McCarthy and is now run by their son Mike.

Starting out as one man and a van working from a small terraced house in Leeds, the McCarthy’s Group now has a turnover of more than £5m and employs a team of 45 people.

McCarthy’s, which saw its turnover increase by 10% in 2017 compared to the previous year,
has diversified to offer other services to individuals and businesses.

The company now owns 200,000 sq ft of storage space across three sites in Leeds, Wakefield and Harrogate. McCarthy’s also operates a serviced business centre in Leeds, provides document management services and runs a shredding company – McCarthy’s Safe Shred.

Mike McCarthy, managing director of McCarthy’s Removals and Storage, said: “Twelve years ago we took our first step away from being purely a removals firm, opening our self storage centre in Leeds, and from there the growth has happened very naturally in areas we realised our customers were looking for. We’re actively looking at further expansion as opportunities become available.

“It’s great that we’ve been able to come into our 50th year on the back of our most successful 12-months to date. We have some exciting plans for growth in the pipeline, and we’re also planning a range of celebrations for our birthday, including lots of community and charity activity.”
