Hotel chain submits plans for 106-room hotel in Scarborough

Plans have been submitted for for a 106-room Premier Inn in Scarborough which will create 30 jobs.

Whitbread, which owns and operates the Premier Inn, has submitted the application for the six-storey hotel at The Sands, Burniston Road – on the Alpamare waterpark site.

In its application, the firm said: “The proposals will provide valuable new hotel accommodation which will support and enhance the local tourist economy success of the North Bay as a leisure destination and tourist draw to the benefit of Scarborough as a whole.

“The proposal will enable further overnight visits to be made in Scarborough and will encourage additional visitor expenditure in the area. It is anticipated that the proposal could provide accommodation for 39,928 adult overnight stays each year, on the assumption that occupation rates will be 86 percent on average, with 1.2 adults staying per room on average.”

The proposed building has a footprint of 980 sq m and will be located centrally on the remaining vacant plot within the water park development area at Burniston Road, with the water park itself located to the east and the approved pub restaurant located immediately to the west.

The ground floor area would include a restaurant six accessible bedrooms. The proposed building includes an external area with seating for hotel and restaurant guests, along with pedestrian access areas. The proposals include amendments to the existing car park to provide 59 additional spaces in addition to the 383 existing spaces.

The firm added: “It is expected that the proposed development will result in the creation of 30 full time equivalent jobs.

“The type of employment generated will include both skilled and non-skilled jobs, including front of house, kitchen, technical and management positions.”

Consultation on the proposals is now open.
