Plans approved for up to 1,400 homes on former Nestle Castleford site

Outline planning approval for a new 26 hectare residential led development in Castleford, which has the potential to deliver a mix of uses including up to 1,400 new homes, extra care provision and a new local centre.

Wakefield Metropolitan Borough Council has approved the application submitted by specialist consultancy HOW Planning, which was submitted in August last year.

It involves the regeneration of the former C6 works (used for chemical storage when it was owned by Hickson Chemicals trading as C6, before its closure in 2006) and Nestle site and is being developed by Castleford Riverside Regeneration.

Plans include the demolition of existing buildings and all necessary remediation works associated with the brownfield site, which sits within the Aire River Growth Corridor Housing Zone.

It will also deliver up to 1,400 residential units, 300m2 retail uses, 650m2 professional and services uses, 1,400m2 extra care provision, 2,000m2 hotel and 1,000m2 health/ crèche facilities.

Rhian Smith, senior planner at HOW Planning, said: “This site has been acknowledged as a key part of the wider regeneration plans for Castleford Town Centre and neighbouring residential areas.  It is ideally suited for this type of development which will make a significant contribution to Wakefield’s housing growth target.”

David Frohnsdorff of Castleford Riverside Regeneration added: “This is a great result and we are looking forward to making a start on development which will deliver much needed regeneration to this part of Castleford. There will be huge investment in the local economy and we believe the new population generated by the housing will benefit local businesses and services, positively impacting on the area for many years to come.”
