Scarborough’s famous Cock O’The North bike race has been cancelled with just two weeks to go before the event on Oliver’s Mount.

Organisers have been working with Scarborough Borough Council following a number of serious incidents involving spectators at last year’s Gold Cup.

They were trying to bring the seaside circuit up to new safety standards, but so far the new required safety levels have not been achieved, they said.

The team behind the race said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to cancel the 2018 Cock O’The North road races.

“We continue to work closely with Scarborough Council to try and rectify the current situation and will update with any news in the coming weeks.

“With regards to ticket refunds, we will continue to try and resolve this complicated situation as soon as possible.”

The race was due to be held on June 23/24.
