Plans to demolish former packaging warehouse for new supermarket revealed

A partially vacant former packaging warehouse in York could be demolished to make way for a Lidl store in a £5m redevelopment.

The building on James Street, once occupied by packaging firm SCA, will be transformed if plans are approved.

Working with the site’s owners Perio News and Lidl UK GmbH, York-based S Harrison plans to deliver the project within the next 18 months, with work due to start this autumn.

More than 30 construction and 40 retail jobs will be created and the supermarket will open during summer 2019.

Chris Hale, from S Harrison, says: “With a high quality contemporary store design, which is easily accessible, the new Lidl will also have 130 car parking spaces. Providing local people with a spacious, attractive shopping centre, and a full range of competitively priced products, as well as an in-store bakery, the redevelopment has been welcomed by the local community.”

Lidl is a global supermarket chain which operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and USA. The James Street store will be the second to open in York.
