People: Sweco hires director of transport; Key appointments for chartered surveying firm; and more

Engineering, environment and design consultancy Sweco UK has appointed Stephen Russell as its new director of transportation.

He joins the consultant from WSP, where he led the UK highways business. He is a chartered engineer with over 30 years’ experience in transport infrastructure, gained working for clients including Highways England and Network Rail and he previously held roles at Mouchel and Atkins.

The appointment marks a return to the business for Russell, who was formerly operations director at Grontmij prior to its acquisition by Sweco.

He will be based in the business’ UK headquarters in Leeds, overseeing transport teams in 14 offices across the UK and Ireland. He also joins the Sweco UK leadership team.

Max Joy, managing director at Sweco UK, said: “Stephen is a highly experienced transport and infrastructure professional who brings a range of skills which will complement and strengthen our transport business. He will help us to broaden our offering, bringing much experience from the wider industry, which will be extremely beneficial to our clients.”

Chartered surveying and project management firm Lucas Lee has made a number of key appointments.

With offices in both Leeds and Huddersfield, the firm has taken on three new members of staff, boosting the firm’s headcount to nine.

Joining the quantity surveying team, headed by Andy Gladwin, includes Lee Thompson, who has formerly worked on five-star hotel projects in Cape Verde. He has been appointed as a senior project manager and quantity surveyor, while Walter Mashumba has joined as an assistant quantity surveyor.

John Clay, a building surveyor graduate – who was employed in-house at St Gobain for several years to manage day-to-day lease issues for Jewsons – has also joined the firm.

Lucas Lee’s director Christopher Lee said: “Our recent phase of expansion makes it an exciting new chapter for the business. We have spent many months recruiting new members for our experienced team to deliver the specific needs of our clients. We wanted to take on people who are able to bring their own expertise and ideas, but will also grow alongside the company, and we think that’s what we’ve achieved.

“We’re currently working on the Grantley Hall project in Ripon, which is a five-star luxury hotel, for example. Lee’s experience will help us to solidify our reputation within this industry. John and Walter are also brilliant additions to the team.”
