£9m supermarket and retail plans revealed

Plans for a mixed-use development creating scores of new jobs in Beverley have been submitted to East Riding Council.

The £9m proposals were lodged by national planning and economics consultancy Lichfields on behalf of Lidl and Cookridge Estates.

The development is earmarked for land to the west of Hull Road, south of Beverley, which has been allocated for a mix of uses including around 800 homes.

The proposed 2,125 sqm Lidl store would create at least 40 full and part time jobs and moves to secure tenants for the additional units are moving forward.

Peta Pank, of Lidl, said: “We are pleased to be progressing this scheme and look forward to working with the council and Cookridge to bring the site forward.

“Our foodstore and the other commercial developments will complement the proposed residential development on adjoining land to the south of Beverley.”

Duncan Waller, of West Yorkshire developers Cookridge Estates, said: “We are in advanced talks with a national coffee outlet and we continue to talk to interested parties for the remaining units.”

Jonathan Wallace, senior director at Lichfields, said: “A new Lidl store will enhance local consumer choice for residents of Beverley.

“The proposals will complement the substantial number of new homes, create employment-generating development, and provide new retail and food and drink facilities to meet the needs of occupiers of the new developments and the wider Beverley area.”

The proposals also include 124 parking spaces, and a new vehicle access from the Hull Road/Minster Way roundabout to serve both the store and the wider housing developments.

The council is expected to consider the application in October and, if approved, work will start in early 2019.
