Victoria Gate parks itself in third position

A Leeds car park has been named amongst the coolest in the world, coming third in a ‘world’s coolest car parks’ competition.

Victoria Gate’s urban multi-storey car park received 11.4% of the votes. Located at the £165m shopping centre, it takes architectural inspiration from the city’s history using twisted aluminium fin cladding that creates a diagonal grid pattern, which is emphasised by shadows.

Quick Parking Morelli – based in an underground cave in the centre of Naples – came in first place with 39.6% of the votes, followed by AZ Sint-Lucas in Belgium with 19.6%. Full shortlist.

Thousands of people voted from a shortlist compiled by architecture and design website DesignCurial and Leeds-based airport parking site Looking4.com, which aimed to celebrate creativity and design in buildings that can often perceived as dull and dreary.

Martin Mansell, managing director of Looking4.com and one of the awards judges, said: “The competition has captured the imagination of people from around the world, with three eye-catching locations being named the World’s Coolest Car Parks.

“The imagination and innovation behind each of these architectural marvels really pushes the boundaries, offering something you simply don’t expect from a car park.”

Sophie Killip, web editor at DesignCurial and fellow judge, added: “With entries ranging from hillside and hospital car parking to urban contemporary art spaces and airport car parks, the public had a difficult decision to make.

“However, it’s great to see so many of the public voting, and they have made a great choice with Quick Parking Morelli – the clever reimagining of the old cavern and its historic tunnels gives the space a new lease of life.”
