My Yorkshire: Nick Coulson, founder of Camp Xplode

Nick Coulson is an entrepreneur and founder of children’s activity camp, Camp Xplode.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I currently live in Leeds.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
On my days off, when the surf is firing, you’ll find me at Cayton Bay catching some waves on my surfboard. If the surf is flat then I’ll probably be cycling over the hills somewhere in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
There’s LOADS I still need to do in Yorkshire! I’m lucky Yorkshire is my home and there’s lots more opportunity. Starting a family and building a home in Yorkshire will be on the cards at some point, hopefully.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
I love the food and the vast countryside and wilderness we have here in Yorkshire. There’s countless country pubs, all serving amazing food.

One of my most memorable meals was when we stopped off at the Black Horse in Grassington, I’d been for a long ride on the bike with one of my best friends and both of us had pushed one too many climbs and were struggling to continue.

A gent in a van picked us up and gave us a lift back to our car but, rather than trying to drive, we decided to refuel in the local pub! It could be down to our being completely exhausted but we consumed so much good food that day!

What is your most Yorkshire trait?
Wearing whatever I want when I want – like shorts and t-shirts all year round!

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.
Yorkshire has nearly a third of the total area of National Parks in England (North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District) covering 1/5th of the regions land area.

What/who is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
Friendly people, Yorkshire puddings and Sunday dinner wraps.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
Yorkshire voting leave in the Brexit referendum. (And, of course, the weather!)

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

It would have to be the Cornish coastline and weather!

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

Nothing. Anything outside of Yorkshire is over-rated and must be in the South!
