My Yorkshire: Scriba PR’s managing director, Katie Mallinson

Where do you live/where are you from?

Born and bred in Huddersfield, I currently live in west Slaithwaite.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

It has to be the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The beautiful scenery and changing exhibitions always make returning a pleasure.
But, if I’m looking for a hideaway with my friends, a little spot we always visit near Aysgarth Falls – with no WiFi and a hot tub – is the perfect place to completely chill!

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

To visit The Black Swan at Olstead. I’m a HUGE foodie, so my getaways usually revolve around where we can go to eat!

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

A couple of years ago we stayed in a place near Helmsley and ate at The Star Inn at Harome. The menu was amazing – including the best crab dish I have ever tasted! There is also a gorgeous outdoor seating area, with giant candles and heaters – the perfect setting for a nightcap under the stars!

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

My accent – even my best ‘telephone’ voice can’t mask it!

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.

Before the Premier League was formed in 1992, Huddersfield Town was the first team to ever win the top flight league three times in a row (my boyfriend told me that one!) But, being more of a rugby league girl than a football fan, I prefer the fact that this game was founded in Huddersfield.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

I think it is brilliant that so many prolific names have come from the region, such as aviator Amy Johnson, adventurer Captain James Cook and artist David Hockney. And that’s before we even get onto the sporting greats!

First experience of Yorkshire (for non-Yorkshire folk)

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

Isn’t it perfect?!

If I had to choose something, it would be some of the local roads – I love that we can now get to London in two hours, but I don’t like that it can take the same amount of time to get from one side of Huddersfield to the other.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

Sarah, my best friend from university. She came to Yorkshire to study – I can’t believe she didn’t stay!

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

I like the concept of the Northern Power House, but rather than worrying so much about the ‘label’ given to Yorkshire and other parts of the North, I think we should just concentrate on pushing forward and raising our profile as a region, regardless of the Government’s stance. There’s been a lot of talk about this subject, but actions speak louder, and we might never get the recognition that so many people are looking for.
