Business in Brief: Airport redevelopment opens; City region bosses back Channel 4 bid; YCCC partnership extended; and more

The Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling has officially opened phase one of Leeds Bradford Airport’s redevelopment.

A multi-million pound development has seen the departure lounge transformed with additional seating plus a range of new shops, cafes, restaurants, bar areas and airport lounges.

The region’s largest airport has also recently been rebranded as Leeds Bradford: Yorkshire’s Airport.

As well as developing its food and beverage offering, the airport has also invested in free non-commercial seating within the departure lounge.

Works on the terminal front are now complete and include an improved Meet & Greet car-park facility, which now allows passengers to collect their car at the front of the terminal building. The airport’s official taxi service, Arrow Cars, have relocated with its new office and taxi-lane now on the terminal forecourt.

In March, the airport opened its first off-site car park, Viking Airport Parking.

Cross party politicians from across West Yorkshire and York have expressed their support for the bid to bring Channel 4’s new national headquarters to the region.

Following the announcement last week that Leeds had been shortlisted for both the broadcaster’s new out of London HQ and a creative hub, the elected members from Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield and York councils outlined the collective strengths of the region during a public meeting of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Members of Combined Authority are the latest to show their support for the Leeds City Region bid following both industry leaders including Andrew Sheldon from True North and academics from the region’s nine universities including Prof Peter Slee, Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett University.

Channel 4 is expected to announce its chosen locations for both the national headquarters and creative hubs in the autumn this year.

Work on urban living development Sky-House has now begun.

The Sky-House development on the Waverley Regeneration site, close to both Rotherham and Sheffield, is part of a campaign funded by Homes England’s  Home Building Fund.

Sky-House plan to bring more than 200 new homes to the Sheffield City Region and beyond over the coming years.

The Sky-House project is based around the back-to-back housing model created by the architects at Sheffield’s Coda Studios.

The Sky-House Co was founded by CODA managing director David Cross and property developer Philip Prince of Broadfield Holdings.
