A new firm dedicated to Court of Protection, community care and mental health law has launched in Leeds.

Solicitors Conor Maguire, Kate Jackson and Lauren Crow have left Cartwright King to establish their own practice, MJC Law.

The newly-formed firm will represent patients detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act, provide advice about community care provision and representation before the Court of Protection in personal welfare matters.

MJC Law has opened offices in Nottingham and Leeds and says it will have nationwide coverage.

Maguire, managing director, said: “We are delighted to set up our own practice. Mental health and mental capacity law is an ever growing and developing area of work in England and Wales. We are all dedicated to helping vulnerable individuals and we are really excited about establishing a firm where that can be our sole focus”.

MJC Law opens at a time where cuts to social care funding and mental health provision is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Director Crow added: “This sort of work is so important. There continue to be funding cuts to essential services and if that is taken with the increasing ageing population, the work we do is becoming ever more relevant. It is vital that individuals and their families have access to quality legal advice from experienced solicitors to navigate the complexities of the law in these areas.”

Director and mental health and Court of Protection expert, Jackson, said: “Our plans are to establish a secure foundation from which to grow the practice in the future, without compromising quality, client care or the delivery of a personable service to our clients.”
